Kayak vs Paddle Board at Condado Lagoon
Condado Lagoon is the calmest open water in San Juan, and you can paddle it on either a kayak or a stand up paddle board. Picking the right one depends on your fitness, your photo plans, and whether you are sharing the boat with a partner or a kid.
This guide breaks down the differences in plain terms so you can show up at the dock with the right rental booked.
Kayak: easier on the back, better for two people
A sit-on-top kayak keeps you low to the water. You sit, you paddle, and you can stop whenever you want without losing balance. Tandem kayaks fit two adults or one adult plus a kid, which makes them the default choice for couples and families.
If you have any doubts about balance, choose the kayak. Even with zero experience you will be paddling in a straight line within five minutes.

Paddle board: more workout, better view
Stand up paddle boards (SUPs) put you upright, which means you can see deeper into the water. Sea grass, tarpon, and the occasional turtle are visible right under your board on Condado Lagoon.
The trade-off is a small balance challenge. Most first-timers fall once or twice. The water is shallow and warm, so a fall is a wet laugh, not a problem.
Speed and distance
Kayaks are faster across distance. A kayak covers the lagoon end to end in about thirty minutes of casual paddling. A SUP takes closer to forty-five.
If you want to explore the mangrove edge near Puente Dos Hermanos and circle back, both work. If you want to push toward the Atlantic inlet, take the kayak.
Photo and video
SUP wins for photos. Standing up gives you a clean horizon line and you can frame Old San Juan in the background. The board is also stable enough to take phone shots without dropping it.
Kayak photos work well in pairs, with one paddler shooting the other from the back seat. Bring a waterproof case either way.
Cost and rental practicality
Both rent in the same price range. Self-guided kayak rentals start around 30 dollars an hour. SUP rentals start around 35. Guided tours bundle gear, instruction and a route for around 50 to 60.
If you book at the public dock near Ashford Avenue, you can switch between kayak and SUP within the same booking at some operators. Ask before you pay.
Pick the kayak if you want speed, easy balance, or are paddling with a kid. Pick the SUP if you want a workout, better photos, and a deeper view of the water. Either way, the lagoon is the same calm pool and you will love it.
